Don Bosco Muhazi TVET Green Club Celebrates World Environment Day
On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, 29 students from the Green Club at Don Bosco Muhazi TVET gathered to celebrate the International Day of Environmental Protection. The event had been postponed from the usual date of 05/06/2024 due to scheduling conflicts. The Green Club, which is supported by both the Gender Matters for Green TVET and ACTEC Projects, organized the activity with the theme of “Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience” as the theme for the year 2024.
Located near the Lake MUHAZI, Don Bosco Muhazi TVET found that their general dust bin needed repairs and cleaning, especially as they entered the summer season. The Green Club members took it upon themselves to repair and clean the garbage, take care of the planted trees, and ensure the surrounding environment was well-maintained. They also visited the lake to learn about proper maintenance methods.
Mr. Jean Claude, the ACTEC activity coordinator, commended the club for their efforts in making positive changes to the school environment and aquatic life. By planting trees and implementing measures to prevent pollution from entering the lake, the club has contributed significantly to environmental conservation.
Gender officer NIYITANGA Aurore emphasized the importance of individual responsibility in environmental protection. Human activities such as deforestation, farming near water bodies, and improper land use can lead to desertification and land degradation. It is crucial for everyone to play their part in preserving the environment.
The Green Club members have committed to ongoing activities such as placing garbage in designated areas, watering trees and gardens, avoiding chemical products and pesticides, and planting trees on campus. They are also planning to establish a Tree Nursery in the upcoming academic year (2024-2025). By engaging in these sustainable practices, the club aims to create a beautiful and eco-friendly environment for all.
