International Environment Day 2024 _Celebrations at Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre Bombo.
Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre Bombo and the entire local community of Bombo Town Council on the 19th June 2024 celebrated the World Environment Day through a community clean up and sensitization on environmental conservation through promoting proper waste management practices. 150 people participated in the activity; these included students, instructors, market vendors, town council officials, shop keepers and boda boda riders, brothers from the Salesian community, the town council Health Inspector and the assistant.
The public appreciated the sensitization on environmental conservation and requested that relevant stakeholders should organize this regularly. The GREEN CLUB members planted trees along the school main entrance as their pledge to reforestation. The day was well spent with a football match summing up the day.
The celebration was belated as every year on 5TH June, people across the globe unite to commemorate International Environment Day. This significant day designated by the UN General Assembly in 1972, serves as a platform to raise awareness on the problems facing our environment such as air and plastic pollution, illegal wildlife trade, sustainable consumption, sea level increase, food insecurity among others. This year’s theme: ‘Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience’.
The celebration of this year’s International Environment Day at Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre Bombo was possible with funding from Austrian Development Cooperation and Jugend Eine Welt. This is part of the broader Gender Matters for Green TVET programme; a four-year initiative (2023-2026) implemented in five Don Bosco TVET Centres across Uganda and Rwanda.
