St. Joseph VTC, Kamuli Marks World Environment Day with a Call to End Plastic Pollution

June 5, 2025 — St. Joseph Vocational Training Centre, Kamuli, joined the global community in commemorating World Environment Day under the 2025 theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution.” The celebration was marked by a variety of engaging and impactful activities that involved students, staff, and the school administration in a collective effort to raise environmental awareness and promote sustainable practices.

The day began with a spiritually enriching Mass, animated by Fr. Godwin and Fr. Cat, setting a reverent and reflective tone for the occasion. In his homily, Fr. Cat emphasized the sacred responsibility of caring for creation, reminding students of their vital role in protecting the environment as stewards of God’s earth.

A moving moment followed as a student from the Green Club delivered a powerful poem centered on the day’s theme. The poem vividly portrayed the devastating effects of plastic pollution on ecosystems and called on everyone to take action toward a cleaner, greener planet.

In a bid to deepen understanding and spark dialogue, the Green Club Patron and the Gender Officer led interactive awareness sessions. These sessions covered critical topics including environmental preservation, proper waste management, and the need for behavioral change in everyday practices. Students, Green club and Gender club members engaged actively, sharing ideas and pledging personal commitments to reduce plastic use.

The highlight of the day was a massive cleanup exercise across the school premises. Green club, Gender Club members, other students and staff worked together in teams, slashing overgrown grass, trimming flowers, collecting litter and plastics, emptying trash bins, and responsibly disposing of the waste. The event not only improved the school’s appearance but also reinforced the values of cleanliness, teamwork, and accountability.

St. Joseph VTC’s celebration of World Environment Day was a vivid demonstration of community-led action toward environmental conservation. Through prayer, poetry, education, and practical work, the school reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing environmentally conscious citizens.

As the day concluded, the message was clear: ending plastic pollution begins with us, and every small action counts toward building a sustainable future
