Patience Uwimana’s Inspiring Journey Sparks Support for Vulnerable Youth in Rwanda, thanks the charities from Salesian Missions-New Rochelle
The story of Ms. Patience Uwimana is a powerful testament to resilience, faith, and hope. Her journey—marked by hardship, determination, and a vision for a better future—has touched the hearts of many, inspiring a wave of support that is already making a difference in the lives of vulnerable youth across Rwanda’s Don Bosco Technical Secondary Schools.
Thanks to a generous donation from Salesian Missions-New Rochelle Procure, students at Don Bosco Gatenga, Muhazi, and Rango TSS have received vital tools necessary to step into the workforce with confidence. Tailoring students received sewing machines and accessories, while those enrolled in welding, Plumbing and masonry trades were provided with complete kits and attires—these resources are essential for young people seeking to develop their skills and seize livelihood opportunities.

The impact of this support goes beyond mere tools; it ignites hope and confidence among the youth who are pioneering their paths toward independence and success. Among them is Patience Uwimana, a young single mother whose story exemplifies the transformative power of community and targeted assistance:
“I feel truly happy. Words cannot fully express my gratitude to the person who made this possible. May God in heaven reward them abundantly,” Patience shared, her voice filled with emotion. “I plan to use the sewing machine to help my family and community as well.”
Her story reflects the struggles faced by many vulnerable young people. Living in difficult conditions with her elderly mother and infant child, Patience often wore old clothes given by others—clothes that left her feeling embarrassed and limited. However, the support she received will drastically change her outlook, according to her testimony.
“One particular challenge I faced was wearing old clothes given by others. Now, I will be able to sew for myself and my family, and I will also sew for others, which will allow me to support myself further,” she explained, her eyes shining with hope.
Patience’s immediate dream is to become economically independent. She plans to join a SACCO (Local Saving and Credit Bank), where she can save the income generated from her work. Her goal is clear: “I will set aside half for my family and save the other half to prepare for my child’s future, ensuring he has a better life.”

Despite other challenges such as lack of a decent home, this newfound confidence is set to transform her outlook on life. “This donation boosts my confidence,” Patience said. “I did not think that I could get such an important machine, but now I believe in myself following this donation. This sewing machine will enable me to work for my development, and eventually, if I get Clients, I hope to rent a proper house and live comfortably like others.” She said

Leadership figures from the schools and the Salesian Planning and Development Office in Rwanda echoed these sentiments, emphasizing their pride and gratitude:
Sister Nyanzira Leocadie of Don Bosco Muhazi shared, “Empowering our youth with the right tools and skills transforms lives and communities. Supported by our partners, we are turning challenges into opportunities for a brighter future.”
Father Gatete Innocent of Don Bosco Rango expressed his dedication: “With the support of our partners and the determination of our students, we are shaping a future where opportunity and hope are accessible to all.”

Father Ukwitegetse Callixte of Don Bosco Gatenga added, “Every young person who walks through our doors has enormous potential. Through continued support and dedication, we help them realize their dreams and contribute to a stronger Rwanda.”
Father Ufitamahoro Servilien, Director of the Planning and Development Office, also conveyed his gratitude: “We sincerely thank our generous donors for their unwavering support, which will make a profound difference in the lives of many young people. This support has sparked hope among vulnerable youth like Patience Uwimana, and we are committed to continuing this work to empower every young person to build a brighter future.”
Seeing Patience’s journey from hardship to hope, from weariness to confidence, will inspire many other youth in her community and across Rwanda’s TVET centers.
As Patience works with her newly acquired skills and tools, she is not just preparing for a career—she wishes to become a role model for her child and a beacon of hope for others. Her story demonstrates that with support, resilience, and faith, anyone can overcome adversity and unlock their full potential.
