About the Project

Laudato Si’ in Action is an environmental stewardship initiative inspired by Pope Francis’ Encyclical Laudato Si’. The project promotes ecological education, biodiversity protection, sustainable environmental practices, and community participation among youth and surrounding communities in Rwanda.

Project Objectives

Ecological Education

Raise environmental awareness among youth and communities through Laudato Si' formation and practical learning.

Biodiversity Restoration

Promote indigenous tree planting and restoration of local ecosystems.

Water Security

Improve access to water through small-scale rainwater harvesting systems.

Community Stewardship

Mobilize youth and communities to take action in caring for our common home.

Key Activities

Environmental Education

Workshops, training sessions and Laudato Si' awareness campaigns.

Tree Planting Campaigns

Planting indigenous and fruit trees in Salesian centres and communities.

Environment Clubs

Strengthening youth-led environmental stewardship initiatives.

Waste Management

Installation of branded waste bins and promotion of clean environments.

Rainwater Harvesting

Supporting vulnerable communities with water conservation systems.

Learning Visits

Educational visits to Lake Muhazi and restored wetlands in Kigali.

Implementation Timeline

  • May 2026: Project launch and stakeholder engagement.
  • June – July 2026: Environmental education and awareness campaigns.
  • July – August 2026: Distribution of environmental kits and waste bins.
  • August – September 2026: Installation of rainwater harvesting systems.
  • September – November 2026: Tree planting campaigns and community action.
  • October 2026: Educational field visits.
  • December 2026: Final evaluation and project closure.

Expected Results

  • ✓ Increased environmental awareness among youth and communities.
  • ✓ Strengthened environmental clubs in Salesian Centres.
  • ✓ More than 5,000 trees planted.
  • ✓ Rainwater harvesting systems installed in targeted communities.
  • ✓ Improved waste management practices.
  • ✓ Greater youth participation in environmental protection initiatives.
