Innovative Agricultural Practices Developed by Student at Don Bosco VTC Palabek

Palabek, June 17, 2025 — At the heart of Don Bosco VTC Palabek, an agriculture student, Nelson Ochan Ater, has unveiled a promising framework aimed at boosting crop production and management among farmers. This development is the outcome of dedicated research and practical application in the field of agriculture.

The cornerstone of Ater’s discovery is the “Three CPs” model, a comprehensive tool for enhancing crop production and ensuring effective pest and protection management. His model delineates three critical components: Crop Production, Crop Pest management, and Crop Protection. These elements are designed to guide farmers through the processes necessary to cultivate healthy crops while safeguarding them from pests and diseases.

Understanding the Three CPs Approach

Ater explains that crop production refers to the cultivation of crops for either consumption or commercial gain. Crop pest management identifies and mitigates the threat posed by organisms that damage crops, while crop protection incorporates strategies to shield crops from various adversities such as pests, diseases, and weeds.

Pre-Harvest and Post-Harvest Techniques

Nelson’s technique emphasizes two pivotal phases in farming: Pre-Harvest Handling (PHH) and Post-Harvest Handling (PHH). These approaches ensure that crops receive optimal care both before and after harvesting.

Pre-Harvest Handling: This includes selecting fertile soil, preparing the land, sowing seeds, applying nutrients, watering, and managing weeds, diseases, and pests. These steps are crucial for nurturing crops to achieve robust growth and maximum yield.

Post-Harvest Handling: This phase focuses on sorting, cleaning, drying, grading, packaging, and storing harvested produce. These processes are instrumental in maintaining the quality and marketability of the crops.

A Pathway to Enhanced Farming Practices

The methods proposed by Nelson Ochan Ater not only aim to improve productivity for subsistence farmers but also enhance commercial farming operations. Through the implementation of his Three CPs and meticulous PHH techniques, farmers can achieve sustainable and profitable agricultural practices.

Nelson expressed his gratitude to Don Bosco VTC Palabek and his instructors for their unwavering support and mentorship, highlighting the institution’s role in equipping him with critical agricultural skills. His journey symbolizes a significant step forward in addressing farming challenges and promoting environmental stewardship.

In summary, Nelson’s innovative strategies offer a roadmap for modernizing agricultural practices among local farmers and potentially inspiring similar advancements globally.
