Gender Matters for Green TVET: Successful Implementation of Safeguarding Mechanism Training at Don Bosco Palabek

Don Bosco Palabek is proud to announce the successful completion of a critical milestone in its ongoing commitment to student safety and well-being through the implementation of the “Gender Matters for Green TVET” project, generously funded by the Austrian Development Cooperation (ADC) and supported by Jugend Eine Welt.

On August 8, 2025, the institution completed a comprehensive safeguarding mechanism training aimed at fostering a secure, respectful, and inclusive environment. This training underscores Don Bosco Palabek’s dedication to cultivating a zero-tolerance culture towards Sexual Harassment and Exploitative Acts (SHEA), ensuring all students and staff are protected.

The training targeted students across various technical departments, including Solar/Electrical Level II, Tailoring, Hairdressing, and Agriculture. A total of 76 students (58 females and 18 males) participated actively in the program. The objective was to equip participants with knowledge of SHEA, preventive strategies, the procedures for reporting and handling complaints, and mitigation tactics to foster awareness and self-protection.

Designed to be interactive and engaging, the session encouraged student participation through questions, discussions, and shared insights. This approach not only facilitated understanding but also demonstrated the students’ readiness and willingness to contribute to a culture of safety. Their active involvement affirmed their role as partners in building a secure and nurturing community.

This training cabinet emphasizes that safeguarding is a collective responsibility that transcends policies—it is embedded in daily interactions and aligns with the institution’s core mission. Don Bosco Palabek is committed to ensuring that its environment is not only one of academic excellence but also a sanctuary where every young person and vulnerable adult can grow confidently, knowing they are valued, protected, and safe.

Brother Hubert Twagirayezu, the Principal of Don Bosco Palabek VTC expressed pride in the students’ enthusiastic participation, noting that their engagement reflects their status as active contributors to fostering a caring and safe community. Furthermore, staff members, including the Principal, participated in the same training, reaffirming the institution’s shared commitment to upholding safeguarding principles.

Gratitude was extended to the Gender Matters Project for their pivotal role in conducting this vital training. The Principal emphasized that, like all institutions governed by rules and policies, Don Bosco Palabek’s safeguarding policy aims to protect everyone—students, staff, and collaborators alike. He also advised students to avoid behaviors such as drug and substance abuse, which could increase the risk of SHEA.

This successful rollout was made possible through the generous support of Jugend Eine Welt and the Austrian Development Cooperation, the proud funders of the Gender Matters for Green TVET Project.

Don Bosco Palabek remains dedicated to creating safe, inclusive, and empowering educational environments where every learner can thrive securely and confidently.
