Empowering Communities: Don Bosco Solar PV Training for Trainers at Don Bosco TSS Gatenga, Rwanda.

In a collaborative effort between the Don Bosco TVETs (Don Bosco VTC Palabek, Don Bosco VTC Bombo, St. Joseph VTC Kamuli) Uganda, Don Bosco TSS Gatenga Rwanda, Association of Sendea Uganda LTD and Engineers Without Borders from Germany, a transformative “Training of Trainers” (ToT) program took place from May 12th to 23rd, 2025. This initiative aimed to equip participants with essential skills in solar engineering, fostering sustainable energy solutions in the region.

Training Overview:

The ToT nature of the program signifies that it was designed not only to impart skills but to create a ripple effect. Participants, now equipped as trainers, can disseminate their knowledge, further expanding the impact of sustainable energy solutions in their communities. The training was part of the initiatives by Don Bosco AGL TVETs to empower the youth in renewable energy with financial support from Jugend Eine Welt. The main target group of the training were the electrical and solar teachers from four Don Bosco Vocational Training Centers from Uganda and Rwanda.

The program covered a comprehensive curriculum, with twelve enthusiastic participants engaging in hands-on activities, including the installation, testing, and commissioning of a solar power system featuring Victron inverters, MPPT charge controller and Jinko batteries. The training covered various aspects such as the fundamentals and applications of DC and AC systems, detailed system sizing for residential and institutional needs, proper wiring techniques, safety standards and best practices. Participants also learned about mounting structures for various environments, remote monitoring and control setups, and different system configurations including hybrid and off-grid setups. The training aimed to build both technical skills and confidence, preparing participants to implement and support solar PV solutions in their communities and vocational centers.”

Key Learnings:

Participants emerged from the program with a diverse skill set, ranging from fundamental solar system installation to advanced troubleshooting and maintenance. The utilization of industry-standard technologies such as Victron inverters, MPPT charge control and Jinko batteries ensured that the training aligned with global best practices.

Beyond the Basics:

The training program went a step further by incorporating critical components – remote monitoring of solar PV systems. Remote monitoring enhances system efficiency and maintenance, ensuring longevity and reliability.

Used for:

During the ToT, participants installed a Solar PV system to power the Girls Dormitory and also installed street lights on the walk way and around the Girls Dormitory to enhance safety and security. In addition, participants changed the fluorescent lamps to LED to save on power consumption.

Global Collaboration:

This collaboration between the Don Bosco Vocational Training Center and Engineers Without Borders reflects a global effort to share knowledge and foster sustainable development. The partnership not only brings expertise from Germany but also facilitates cross-cultural exchange, enriching the learning experience for all involved.

Continued Impact:

This marked the third solar training collaboration between Engineers Without Borders and Don Bosco TVETs in AGL Province. The first two, held in Kamuli and Bombo, Uganda, set the stage for the Gatenga training. These initiatives, building upon each other, create a network of trained individuals capable of spearheading sustainable energy projects within Don Bosco TVETs and throughout the country.

Certificates of Achievement:

To recognize the dedication and successful completion of the program, participants were awarded certificates. These documents acknowledge their proficiency in various skills, from technical aspects like solar installation and system configuration to softer skills such as remote monitoring.

Looking Ahead:

The impact of the Don Bosco Solar PV Training extends beyond the confines of the training period. Graduates of this ToT program are now equipped to contribute actively to the development of sustainable energy solutions in their TVET Centres and the wider community. The integration of remote monitoring ensures that these solutions are technologically sound.

In conclusion, the Don Bosco Solar PV Training stands as a beacon of empowerment, illuminating the path towards a future where communities harness the power of the sun for sustainable development.
