UNHCR Equips Salesians of Don Bosco with Advanced Agricultural Machine to Combat Hunger in Palabek Refugee Settlement
PALABEK, UGANDA — The Salesians of Don Bosco in the Palabek Refugee Settlement have received a significant boost to their agricultural and livelihood programs through a new partnership with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). This strategic support aims to strengthen agricultural capacity, empower local farmers, and address food insecurity among the host community and the large population of refugees, who primarily hail from South Sudan.
To modernize farming operations and increase crop yields, the UNHCR has provided a comprehensive suite of heavy-duty agricultural machine. To maximize the tractor’s utility, the donation includes a high-capacity FIELDKING trailer, which will be crucial for transporting harvested crops, seeds, and farming materials across the settlement.
The machinery package also features heavy-duty soil preparation implements designed to cultivate large tracts of land efficiently. These include a FIELDKING disc harrow, a FIELDKING mouldboard plough, and additional disc ploughing attachments. Furthermore, the inclusion of a NARDI front-end loader bucket will allow the Salesian team to efficiently clear land, move heavy soil, and manage agricultural infrastructure projects.
Brother Hubert Twagirayezu, the Salesian Economer in the Palabek Refugee Settlement, highly commended the UNHCR’s vital support. He emphasized that the new machinery represents a profound “added value to the fight against hunger in the settlement.”
The Salesians of Don Bosco have long been a pillar of support in Palabek, taking care of refugees by offering a holistic range of services that include educational support, spiritual guidance, and vital livelihood programs. By integrating this advanced farming machinery into their operations, the Salesians are now better equipped to scale up their agricultural initiatives, provide hands-on farming training to refugees, and foster long-term self-reliance within the community.
