First Lady of Burundi Visits Don Bosco Ngozi High School to Promote Hygiene Awareness
On Tuesday, September 29, 2026, Don Bosco Ngozi High School had the honour of welcoming Her Excellency Angeline NDAYISHIMIYE, First Lady of the Republic of Burundi, as part of an awareness campaign focused on health and hygiene in schools.
The Director of Don Bosco Ngozi High School, Rev. Fr. Jean Paul NDAYIKENGURUTSE, welcomed the First Lady, the ministers and the representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Burundi. On behalf of the entire school community, he expressed his appreciation for the initiative, which supports the school’s efforts to promote discipline, cleanliness and the protection of students. He then briefly presented the school, highlighting some of the challenges it faces, particularly limited access to water.
In his remarks, the Minister of National Education and Scientific Research, Dr. François HAVYARIMANA, encouraged students to observe health and sanitation measures and urged school authorities to regularly strengthen hygiene education. The Minister of Public Health, for his part, emphasized the importance of prevention and vigilance against communicable diseases.
The representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) stressed that epidemics know no borders and that schools, particularly boarding schools, must remain vigilant and adhere to protective measures.
In her address, First Lady of Burundi Angeline NDAYISHIMIYE called on students to make cleanliness a daily responsibility. She particularly emphasized simple practices that can help prevent cholera, Ebola and other diseases associated with poor hygiene, while encouraging young people to adopt responsible behaviours to protect their health.
She also stressed the importance of preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs), Mpox and HIV/AIDS, as well as understanding the consequences of risky behaviours. The First Lady encouraged the students to protect their future through responsible choices and a healthy lifestyle.
On the occasion, soap, juice, balls and mattresses were donated to students of Don Bosco Ngozi High School. The donations represent a concrete contribution towards improving the students’ living conditions in the boarding school.
The Don Bosco Ngozi High School community extends its sincere appreciation to Her Excellency Angeline NDAYISHIMIYE, the UMUGIRANEZA Bonne Action Foundation, which she founded, the Government of Burundi, and the WHO for the visit, the awareness campaign and the support provided to the students.
