Impactful Industrial Study Visit to SteelRwa Enriches Building Construction Students at Don Bosco Gatenga

the Job Service Office of Don Bosco Gatenga Technical Secondary School organized a highly impactful study visit for Level 5 Building Construction students and their teachers. The destination was SteelRwa, a prominent steel manufacturing industry located in Rwamagana District.

Upon arrival, the delegation was warmly welcomed by the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team at SteelRwa. The visit began with a comprehensive safety induction, where the team emphasized the importance of workplace safety and introduced students to the procedures and principles that govern industrial environments. A strong focus was placed on the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), with clear demonstrations on its usage and significance in ensuring the well-being of workers.

Following the safety induction, the group was welcomed by the Production Manager, who gave a brief but informative overview of the production process at SteelRwa. He explained how scrap metal is collected and transformed into steel bars — a critical material in the construction industry.

The study tour continued with a guided walk through the different sections of the industry. Students and teachers had the opportunity to observe firsthand how each department contributes to the overall production process. The explanations provided at each stage enriched the learning experience, making it a practical extension of the theoretical knowledge gained in class.

Students were visibly excited by the experience. Moreno, the class representative, shared his thoughts:

“This study visit is very important to us as students who will graduate very soon. We have learned a lot, especially about steel bars, which are among the main materials we will work with in our future careers. Learning about the workplace face to face makes this visit meaningful for us as future engineers.”

Teachers also appreciated the opportunity to connect theory with practice. Mr. Claude Iraguha, one of the teachers accompanying the group, highlighted the educational value of such visits:

“This study visit is very important to us as teachers because it provides an opportunity to see how the theory taught in class applies in real-world situations. It is a valuable experience for both students and teachers.”

This industrial visit not only strengthened the students’ understanding of construction materials and industrial processes but also enhanced their readiness for the job market. It served as a bridge between classroom learning and the real-world environment they will soon enter as young professionals.
