Mixed Reactions as Students Graduate from Don Bosco Palabek VTC

Palabek, Uganda – In a vibrant ceremony filled with joy and anticipation, 269 students from Don Bosco Palabek Vocational Training Centre (VTC) celebrated their graduation this Friday, 21st February, 2025, marking a significant milestone in their educational journey.

However, the event also brought forth mixed reactions among the graduates as they prepare to step into the labor market armed with new skills.

Among the graduates, Akelu Joyce expressed her excitement about completing her tailoring course, stating, “I feel very happy. The skills I’ve acquired here will help me in my future plans to open my own workshop and eventually teach others.”

Currently working in a local workshop, Joyce is optimistic about her future and the potential to contribute to the community.

Similarly, hairdressing graduates shared their enthusiasm for their newfound skills. “It’s a special day for me because this is my first graduation,” said one student. “I’m currently working in a salon and hope to open my own studio next year.” She echoed these sentiments, expressing her ambition to establish a salon of her own while applying her training in a practical setting.

The agricultural graduates showcased a different perspective on their education. Mr. Gerald, who focused on both crop and animal husbandry, highlighted the importance of innovative solutions in the current dry season.

“With people struggling to grow crops due to a lack of rain, I believe I can make a difference by cultivating vegetables and selling them in the market,” he explained. Another agriculture graduate shared his pride in achieving top marks and his commitment to year-round vegetable production.

“My training has equipped me to identify animal habitats and manage poultry as well,” he noted, emphasizing the diverse skills gained during his time at Don Bosco. As the graduates reflect on their experiences, the sentiments are a mix of excitement and apprehension about the future.

While many are eager to apply their skills in the real world and pursue their entrepreneurial dreams, some express concern over the challenges they may face in a competitive job market.

The event, graced by esteemed guests, government officials, representatives of the United Nations, and members of the Salesian community, highlighted the unwavering commitment of the institution to equipping young people, including South Sudanese refugees and members of the host community, with essential vocational skills.

During the ceremony, Brother Twagirayezu, SDB, Principal of Don Bosco VTC, addressed the gathering with a message of pride and hope, recognizing the hard work and perseverance of the graduates.

“Today, we do not only celebrate an academic achievement but also the resilience and determination of our students who have overcome countless challenges to stand here as skilled professionals ready to shape their own futures,” he remarked.

Inspiring the Next Generation

As the graduates marked the beginning of their new journeys, the event served as an inspiration to current students to embrace learning opportunities and strive for excellence. “To our graduates, your journey does not end here. Carry with you not only the technical skills you have learned but also the values of hard work, perseverance, and service to others,” encouraged Brother Twagirayezu.I

n concluding the ceremony, a prayer was offered for the continued success of the graduates, the well-being of the donors and staff, and the future sustainability of the vocational training center.
