Don Bosco VTC Bombo Leads the Way in Green TVET Innovation with Annual Skills Competition

BOMBO — On Wednesday, December 10, 2025, the grounds of Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre (VTC) Bombo were transformed into a hub of “green” ingenuity. The institution hosted its highly anticipated Annual Skills Competition, a flagship event organized by the Job Service Officer (JSO) and the Gender Officer.

The competition served as a powerful showcase of how technical proficiency can be leveraged to solve the global challenge of Environmental Conservation.

A Commitment to Inclusive Excellence

The event featured 56 talented participants, including 35 male and 21 female trainees, reflecting the institution’s successful drive toward gender-inclusive technical education. The function was graced by the Principal of Don Bosco VTC, whose presence highlighted the administration’s unwavering support for student-led innovation and the “Green TVET” agenda.

Eco-Friendly Innovations Take Centre Stage

Five student-led companies presented prototypes that proved technical development and sustainability go hand-in-hand. The participating teams included:

  • Kam Urban Gardens: Showcasing sustainable, space-efficient agricultural solutions for food security in urban areas.
  • Born Shield: An innovation focused on environmental durability and protective safety.
  • Page Protect: A creative venture centred on recycling and sustainable stationery solutions.
  • Silk Skin: Bridging beauty and nature through organic cosmetology and eco-friendly skincare.
  • Electrical Towel Warmer: A technical fabrication designed to balance domestic utility with high energy efficiency.

Distinguished Guests and Community Impact

The competition was attended by key partners, including SOS, a sponsoring organization committed to youth development. The event’s Chief Guest, Ms. Beatrice Akello (CEO of Eco Champions), inspired the trainees with her insights into the burgeoning green economy.

The event also served as a major community outreach platform. As neighbours and community members looked on, the JSO distributed flyers and made a public call to action, informing the youth that vacancies are still available for the upcoming intake. This direct engagement reinforced Don Bosco VTC’s role as a pillar of local development.

Expert Guidance: The Path to Market Readiness

A panel of three expert judges scrutinized the projects based on technical execution and market viability. Their feedback provided a roadmap for the trainees’ transition from students to business owners:

  • Standardization: The judges emphasized the necessity of complying with UNBS (Uganda National Bureau of Standards) regulations to ensure product safety and consumer trust.
  • Professional Identity: Trainees were urged to formally register their business entities and protect their intellectual property to thrive in a competitive market.

The 2025 Skills Competition was a resounding success. It proved that the trainees at Don Bosco VTC Bombo are not just learning trades; they are becoming the innovators and environmental stewards needed to solve the real-world problems of tomorrow.
