Salesians Strengthen New Kagwema Mission with Essential Sanitation Infrastructure

KAGWEMA, Burundi — The Salesians of Don Bosco have completed construction of a new hygiene and sanitation facility at the newly established Don Bosco Kagwema Community, marking an important step in the development of the Salesian presence in the area.

The facility is being established as part of efforts to create a safe and dignified environment for children and young people participating in activities at the developing youth center.

Located in rural Bujumbura, Kagwema is currently in the early stages of development. The Salesian community is working to establish the infrastructure needed to support its growing presence and future programs for young people.

The newly completed sanitation block provides separate facilities for boys and girls.

The infrastructure also incorporates water and waste-management facilities and an underground septic system.

With the Salesian community still expanding its physical presence in Kagwema, the sanitation infrastructure provides an essential facility for current activities while contributing to the foundation for future educational, pastoral and youth-development programs.

According to Father Servilien Ufitamahoro, PDO Director and Provincial Economer: “Establishing safe, modern hygiene facilities is a fundamental first step as we build our new presence in Kagwema. Our goal is to ensure that from day one, every young person who comes to Don Bosco experiences a safe, dignified environment where their health is protected and their human dignity is honored.”

To this, Father Ntunzwenimana Ferdinand, Salesian priest appointed to Kagwema added: “As our community takes shape here in Kagwema, these facilities will serve the hundreds of children joining our daily oratory and chapel activities. Beyond providing clean water and sanitation, this project restores hope and sets a healthy foundation for the future schools and programs we plan to bring to these young people.”
