Salesians of Don Bosco Spearhead Decent Work Advocacy in Rwanda with National Dialogue

KIGALI – 07/25/2025 – Demonstrating a deep commitment to social justice and workforce development, the Salesians of Don Bosco in Rwanda, with the support of Don Bosco Tech Africa, organized a pivotal dialogue today aimed at advancing decent work opportunities throughout the nation. The event served as a crucial platform for collaboration and strategic planning, underscoring the Salesians’ proactive role in shaping a more equitable labor landscape.

Eng. Mutsindashyaka Andre, Secretary General of Rwanda Extractive Industry Workers Trade Union and the President the Gasabo District Partners, guided the discussion, providing a detailed overview of the current employment situation in Rwanda and outlining pathways for future progress.

The audience included representatives from diverse sectors, including company executives, TVET educators, Salesian management, and media professionals, all united by a shared commitment to improving labor conditions.

The event showcased the Salesians’ dedication to addressing critical societal needs through decent work and education.

Eng. Mutsindashyaka’s presentation highlighted the four pillars of the Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP), which is aligned with the International Labour Organization (ILO)’s agenda: employment promotion, social protection, social dialogue, and rights at work.

“Rwanda’s vision is to ensure everyone has access to full, productive, and freely chosen employment, particularly the youth and women,” Eng. Mutsindashyaka emphasized. “This requires a concerted effort to enhance skills, promote entrepreneurship, and establish comprehensive labor market information systems.”

The dialogue also explored Rwanda’s advancements in social protection, noting the decrease in the national poverty rate. However, participants also acknowledged the need to tackle the high rate of informal employment and limited awareness of labor rights.

“We must address these challenges head-on to build a more inclusive and equitable society,” said Mr. Elias Hakizimana, one of the participants. “The Salesians of Don Bosco are providing a vital service in facilitating these discussions and driving meaningful change.” He added.

The Salesians of Don Bosco, known for their dedication to vocational training and skills development, reaffirmed their commitment to empowering young Rwandans.

“Our mission is to equip young people with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the workforce,” said Father Innocent Gatete, the legal representative of the congregation. “Through dialogues like this, we can ensure that our efforts are aligned with the needs of the labor market and the aspirations of the next generation.”

The dialogue concluded with a renewed commitment to advancing decent work principles across the nation. The Salesians of Don Bosco, along with Don Bosco Tech Africa, continue to play a crucial role in shaping a brighter future for the Rwandan workforce through a concerted effort in the promotion of decent work. Through their dedication to education, skills training, and advocacy, they are championing a movement towards a more equitable and prosperous society.
