Salesian Family Bids Farewell to Brother Hubert Twagirayezu, SDB, Buried at Don Bosco Kabgayi
KABGAYI, RWANDA | July 24, 2026 — The Salesian Family, relatives, friends and members of the faithful gathered on Friday, 24th July 2026 for the burial of Brother Hubert Twagirayezu, SDB, at the Salesian Cemetery located at Scolasticat Don Bosco Kabgayi.
Brother Hubert tragically died in a road accident in Uganda while traveling to Rwanda for the Priestly Ordination of Salesian Deacons held on July 18, 2026.
A Life of Service and Planning for the Poor
Before pursuing further studies in the USA, Brother Hubert Twagirayezu served as Director of the Salesian Planning and Development Office and the Provincial Economer.
Upon returning from his studies, he was deployed to Don Bosco Palabek in Uganda, where at the time of his death he was serving as Director of Don Bosco Palabek VTC and also as Economer of the Palabek Community.
Those who worked with him described Brother Hubert as a man who loved storytelling, shared information generously with his confreres, and had a deep love for work.
He fully embraced Don Bosco’s spirit of hard work, often saying that rest would come later, according to testimonies shared at the event.
He was also known for initiating projects aimed at uplifting the poor, and he leaves behind several projects he had envisioned.
Family Remembers a Caring Brother
Speaking on behalf of the family, his brothers and sister remembered Hubert as hardworking, determined, and committed to helping others and correcting those who went astray.

“He loved being with the vulnerable, children, and elders. That is why he chose this vocation,” they said.
“In the 44 years we spent together, it was God’s grace. He did well what he was entrusted with.”
The family expressed gratitude to the Salesians for safeguarding his vocation and for ensuring he was laid to rest with honor.
The news of his passing was especially painful for the youth he worked with in Palabek, with some requiring medical attention due to the shock.
Church Leaders Call Him an Example
Fr. Gabriel Ngendakuriyo, Provincial Superior of AGL, thanked Bishop Balthazar Ntivuguruzwa of Kabgayi Diocese, religious leaders, Christians, and friends who joined the Salesians for the burial. He asked the congregation to pray for the Province to find a successor with the same gifts and dedication, noting that “the work he was entrusted with requires great sacrifice.”
Bishop Balthazar Ntivuguruzwa comforted the family and the Salesian community.
Addressing the youth, he said Brother Hubert should be “a book of history and an example of self-sacrifice for the young people.”
“The harvest that Brother Hubert worked on and brought this far is now in your hands,” he said, adding that this moment should be a source of hope and strength that comes from God.
The Provincial of the Salesians of Belgium and Netherlands was also present at the ceremony.
Legacy
“Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May Brother Hubert rest in peace. Amen.”
