Refugee Farmers in Palabek Benefit from Conservation Agriculture and Modern Irrigation
Palabek Refugee Settlement in Uganda is witnessing a agricultural transformation, thanks to the efforts of the Salesians of Don Bosco. The organization has established a demonstration garden aimed at teaching the refugee community sustainable farming practices while boosting crop yields.
The garden serves as an educational hub where farmers learn horticultural and agronomic techniques that promote conservation agriculture. A key feature of the project is an advanced irrigation system that allows crops to be grown year-round, providing stability and food security for the refugee population.
This season, farmers in the demonstration area have planted watermelons, cabbages, onions, and okra. Transplanting is also underway for additional crops including sukuma wiki, eggplants, and African eggplants, diversifying the agricultural options for the community.
Both farmers and field staff are actively engaged in managing the garden, applying new techniques learned through training. The initiative aims not only to improve immediate food production but also to foster sustainable farming practices that can be replicated across the settlement.
This project exemplifies the positive impact of combining education, modern technology, and community involvement to empower refugees through agriculture.
