Gender Matters for Green TVET Project Making Positive Impact on Students in Rwanda and Uganda

The Gender Matters for Green TVET Project Team, led by Program Manager Johanna Dreher, recently visited Rwanda and Uganda to assess the implementation progress of the project and to monitor the impact of the project on students.

During the visit to Rwanda and Uganda, Johanna Dreher was impressed by the emphasis placed on the program by the gender officers, JSOs and other staff members.

She noted that every TVET center now has a counseling unit and a gender officer in place, allowing students to seek support and guidance when facing challenges. Additionally, improvements such as the construction of female toilets and the reconstruction of daycare centers have been made to benefit the students.

Dreher also highlighted a motivating encounter with a young female student in Uganda who had set up her own electrical solar shop after gaining knowledge and skills through the project. The student expressed her desire to further improve her skills and become an engineer, showcasing the tangible impact of the program on students’ lives.

Furthermore, meetings with single mothers who had participated in the project last year and current agriculture students at Don Bosco Muhazi TVET school revealed that the project had brought about positive changes in their lives.

Dreher mentioned plans to provide toolkits on a more individualized basis to better cater to the specific needs and interests of the students, ultimately enhancing their opportunities to set up their own businesses.

Overall, the Gender Matters for Green TVET Project is making a positive impact on students in Rwanda and Uganda, empowering them with skills and knowledge to improve their lives and build a better future.
