Empowering Futures: Young Women Gain Business Skills at Don Bosco Bombo
BOMBO, Uganda – June 27, 2025 – Twenty vulnerable young women from the Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre Bombo embarked on a transformative journey , participating in a vital business skills training program. The initiative, proudly funded by Jugend Eine Welt and the Austrian Development Cooperation as part of their impactful “Gender Matters in Green TVET” project that is running in 5 TVET centers in Uganda and Rwanda, centered on the critical theme of “Starting a Business and Sustainability.”
The diverse group of participants, skilled in areas ranging from plumbing, electrical, and solar technology to catering and hairdressing, gathered to acquire the entrepreneurial knowledge essential for navigating Uganda’s dynamic labor market. For many, the path to stable employment is fraught with challenges, making self-employment and sustainable business ventures a powerful avenue for economic independence.
The training delved into the practicalities of entrepreneurship, equipping these aspiring business owners with foundational skills in areas such as developing a robust business plan, understanding market demands, managing finances effectively, and implementing successful marketing strategies. A key emphasis on “sustainability” ensured that the curriculum extended beyond mere startup principles, preparing the young women to adapt, grow, and maintain their businesses amidst evolving economic landscapes.
By targeting girls and young women in traditionally male-dominated fields like plumbing, electrical, and solar, as well as those in more conventional areas like catering and hairdressing, the program fosters economic independence and breaks down gender stereotypes. This holistic approach aligns perfectly with the goals of the “Gender Matters in Green TVET” project, which aims to promote gender equality within technical and vocational education and training, particularly in emerging green industries.
The Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre Bombo, a beacon of vocational excellence, served as the ideal venue for this crucial training. The collaboration with Jugend Eine Welt highlights a shared vision of empowering marginalized youth through education and practical skills, ultimately contributing to more resilient communities.
The training represents more than just a workshop; it’s an investment in the future. By equipping these young women with the tools to innovate, create jobs, and manage their own enterprises sustainably, the program is setting them on a path toward self-sufficiency and long-term prosperity, profoundly impacting their lives and the broader socio-economic fabric of their communities.
