Don Bosco Palabek Farm Cultivates Onions to Meet Local Demand
In a bid to meet the high demand for onions in Palabek Refugee Settlement, farmers at Don Bosco Palabek farm have successfully harvested 2 bags of onions from their demonstration garden. The onions, which were planted in November and solely survived on irrigation water, are expected to yield a total of 4 bags, each weighing 100kg, from the one acre cultivated.
The onions spent one month in the nursery before being ready for transplanting, and based on research conducted by the farm, onions are one of the most commonly used vegetables in Palabek. Despite this high demand, local farmers have not been cultivating onions, leading to a reliance on supplies from distant places like Gulu, Moyo, and other areas.
Recognizing the market potential, Don Bosco Palabek farm has made the decision to grow and supply onions locally to meet the demand. With the successful harvest of their demonstration garden, the farm is now looking to scale up onion cultivation to further contribute to the local economy and provide fresh produce to the community.
This initiative not only aims to meet the local demand for onions but also showcases the importance of irrigation in agriculture. By utilizing irrigation water, farmers at Don Bosco Palabek farm have been able to successfully cultivate onions and demonstrate the potential for increased agricultural productivity in the region.
