Bombo Unites for a Greener Tomorrow: World Environment Day 2025 Focuses on Beating Plastic Pollution

BOMBO, UGANDA – June 5, 2025 – Today, as the world celebrates World Environment Day, Bombo Town Council is taking a proactive stance against the global scourge of plastic pollution. In a powerful display of community spirit and environmental stewardship, students from Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre, alongside SOS Childrens Village and schools, TUNAWEZA, and community members, are joining forces with Bombo Town Council for a massive community clean-up exercise.

This year’s World Environment Day theme, “Ending Global Plastic Pollution,” resonates deeply in communities like Bombo, where the pervasive issue of plastic waste poses significant environmental and health challenges. From discarded plastic bottles to polythene bags, plastic litter chokes drainage systems, degrades soil quality, and poses a threat to local ecosystems.

The collaborative clean-up initiative, spearheaded by Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre and TUNAWEZA, aims to not only physically remove plastic waste from key areas but also to instill a lasting sense of responsibility and environmental awareness among the younger generation. The participation of Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre students, known for their practical skills and community engagement, brings valuable organizational capacity and manpower to the effort. They are working hand-in-hand with enthusiastic primary school pupils, who are learning firsthand about the importance of proper waste management and the detrimental effects of plastic.

“We are thrilled to see such a strong turnout and dedication from our young people,” stated Ms Elizabeth the Health inspector of bombo Town Council. “Their energy and commitment are truly inspiring. This clean-up is more than just picking up litter; it’s about fostering a culture of environmental responsibility that will benefit Bombo for years to come.”

The clean-up operation is targeting several critical areas within Bombo, including the bustling market areas, residential zones, and drainage channels, all of which are often impacted by accumulating plastic waste. Equipped with gloves, masks, refuse bags, and a shared purpose, the students and community members are systematically clearing the streets and open spaces.

“At Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre, we believe in empowering our students not just with technical skills but also with a strong sense of social responsibility,” commented Ms. Edith Naturinda the Gender Officer. “Participating in World Environment Day is a perfect opportunity for them to put that into practice what is discussed with in the GREEN Club meetings and contribute positively to their community.”

Beyond the immediate clean-up, Bombo Town Council plans to leverage this initiative to launch ongoing awareness campaigns about responsible waste disposal, the benefits of recycling, and the urgent need to reduce single-use plastics. The active involvement of the other community members is a testament to the long-term vision of nurturing environmentally conscious citizens of all ages.

This was made possible with funding from the Austrian Development Cooperation and Jugend Eine Welt

As the sun sets on World Environment Day 2025, Bombo stands a little cleaner, a little greener, and with a renewed commitment to tackling plastic pollution. The collective efforts of Don Bosco Vocational Training Centre, TUNAWEZA,SOS children’s village and schools and Bombo Town Council serve as a shining example of how local communities can come together to create a tangible difference in the fight for a healthier planet.
