Father Pierre Ngoboka’s Inspiring Call for Youth to Embrace Technical and Vocational Training

The Provincial Superior of the Salesians of Don Bosco in the Africa of the Great Lakes (AGL) Province, which includes Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda, Father Pierre Celestin Ngoboka, has urged young people to consider pursuing technical and vocational training courses. This is because these courses have proven to be successful in providing employment opportunities through recruitment and job creation.

He made the call recently at the inauguration of the ACTEC funded building at Don Bosco Muhazi TVET School which is located in Gikomero Sector in Gasabo District in Kigali City.

Father Ngoboka stated that the Government of Rwanda’s dedication to the development of technical and vocational training education is a compelling indication of abundant opportunities for young people.

He explained that, in the past, TVET students were typically those with lower academic standings. However, this is no longer the case as students with high grades are now being encouraged to pursue TVET studies, as it equips them with valuable knowledge for their future endeavors.

He requested educators and other participants of the inaugural event to encourage young people to consider Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) because that is where they can secure a livelihood.

He provided examples of numerous individuals who have pursued Technical courses, particularly in Salesian institutions like Don Bosco Gatenga TSS, and are now employed in significant positions such as carpentry, electricity, plumbing, welding, and other technical professions.

“When examining the present scenario, it is evident that the youth with promising futures are those who have acquired vocational skills and pursued technical courses. It is crucial for the youth to understand that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) holds utmost significance in the current times,” Father Ngoboka emphasized.

In order to achieve a knowledge-based economy, the Government of Rwanda expects that at least 60% of students who graduate from o’Level will continue their studies in TVET schools by 2024.

The figures on the website of the Rwanda TVET Board show that there are about 366 TVET schools in Rwanda, while it is desirable that at least every sector in Rwanda has one such school.

In Rwanda, there are three Salesian TVET schools, namely Don Bosco Gatenga TSS located in Kicukiro District, Don Bosco Rango TSS located in Huye District and Don Bosco Muhazi TSS located in Gasabo District in Gikomero Sector.
