Gender Matters for Green TVET in Kamuli: Female Youths facing the business World in male dominated spaces
Having trained and graduated at St. Joseph Vocational Training Centre in male dominated courses of Plumbing, Electrical, Solar and Agriculture, the female graduates were supported by Gender Matters for Green TVET Project to start Micro-businesses in those particular areas after mentoring them in business and financial literacy
The Project organised a one day’s feedback and life skills meeting at St. Joseph Vocational Training Centre Kamuli to measure progress of these businesses and device strategies of improving them eventually leading to gaining meaningful profit that promotes girl agency and financial independence.
It was facilitated by the Gender Advisor, Ogwang Prossy Charlotte who dwelt on team building, conflict management, marketing and branding and general financial management.
The Gender Officer of St. Joseph VTC Kamuli, Nanyonjo Lydia, led Graduates into sharing their experiences in the two months business world journey and the common challenge portrayed through discussion and presentation. The Job Service Officer Ajala Jesse wrapped up the training by drawing an action plan that was to be implanted in the businesses thereafter.
The Female graduates appreciated Gender Matters for Green TVET Project for the financial support and continued capacity building that has made them stand out in the Community.
One female by the names of Lydia Namusosa said, “I will not give up on this business even if am to remain alone because someone out there has sacrificed their money for me to become better”.
This review and capacity building meeting for female Graduates at St. Joseph Vocational Training Centre Kamuli was made possible with funding from Austrian Development Cooperation and Jugend Eine Welt. This is part of the broader Gender Matters for Green TVET programme; a four-year initiative (2023-2026) implemented in five Don Bosco TVET Centres across Uganda and Rwanda.
